Mere Mortals Are We

Mary in Jersey (UK) has adopted a number of card and they always come back with amazing Jersey postage. This one is no exception. Lovely big image of the Queen in her younger years.

Mary probes the mystery that is King Arthur in her comments on the back of this postcard featuring the table that was more than likely inspired by the legend, not the actual table. This one is in the Great Hall at Winchester Castle in Winchester, England. As Mary says, “the secrets of the king are not for the eyes and ears of us lesser mortals.”

And this brings another book, or rather, series of books, to mind. Susan Cooper wrote a children's fantasy series called The Dark is Rising Sequence in the 1960s and 1970s. The second book in the series is called The Dark is Rising and it features a boy who on his 11th birthday discovers he has unusual powers. Sound familiar? Well, comparison to Harry Potter are inevitable, but The Dark is Rising Sequence is more detailed and relies on lots of Arthurian and other legend.
