Bus Tour Detour

This view is looking down the hill from the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, where visitors may straddle the Prime Meridian.

Ruth spent her first full day in London at Greenwich in 2008. She had arrived in the morning, and promptly boarded a double-decker bus for a tour of the city. She noticed hundreds of London police near Parliament, and decided something must be up and she would detour from her plans and take a boat ride on the Thames up to Greenwich.

While in Greenwich, Ruth visited the museum housed in the building at the bottom of the hill, and she hiked up the hill to the Observatory. She had a lovely picnic lunch on the lawn pictured here, then headed back to London. It was then she learned the police were on hand to control protestors. US President Bush (the younger) was in town that day. Ruth thought it would be fine to sally forth with her bus tour since the crowds must have certainly dispersed by then, but, that was not the case.

Ruth's bus tour was diverted at every turn because of the protests and roadblocks. The tour guide took it all in stride and made up a script for all the unplanned sites they saw. Ruth writes that it was the "best tour of London ever!"
